Bio

The music of Jon F. Howe (b. 1997) combines a natural, organic, approach to harmony and form as well as striking motivic gestures with an idiomatic approach to the instruments. Howe combines classical and traditional motifs drawing inspiration from his Irish heritage, as well as other folk music idioms with lush harmonies and lyrical melodies. Jon is the recipient of the 2018 Geoffrey Gibbs and Sona Aronian Scholarship in Music Composition (University of Rhode Island), and the 2019 College of Arts and Sciences Student Fellowship (University of Rhode Island) where he composed Dullahan's Ride, a short tone poem for orchestra.

A member of NAfME, Jon is happy to mix education with composition and is more than happy to collaborate with educators, performers, and artists of all types. In addition to music, Jon has been a public speaker for events discussing the asexual orientation, which he personally identifies as.

Jon frequently draws inspiration from nature, going on frequent hikes across New England. Over time Jon developed a hobby of taking photographs of his experiences across his journeys. Many of these photos can be found on his Instagram.

Jon holds a Bachelors of Music in Composition degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Masters of Music degree from The Hartt School. His major composition teachers have included Gilda Lyons, Tawnie Olson, Anthony R.
